Coffee, What I Live For – Week 12, 2018

Coffee - Dramanti Artisan Roaster

Visiting different coffee shops each day is something that can be a challenge at times. For two particular reasons for me in the more recent future. The first is that to find a cafe I have not visited that I want to visit I have to travel some distance now. The second reason is that this has become somewhat challenging with some ongoing car problems. The car problems are more of an annoyance for the most part, but they do also make life kind of difficult.

Through this period I have come to realise there are two different sorts of cafes for me. The first is the cafes that I visit once or maybe twice. While they are often nice, there is not anything that they are doing outstanding that makes me think I need to go back here.

The second is the cafes that I feel comfortable in, either space wise or because I know I am going to be more than happy with the coffee. When I get a coffee I like to take a photo and spend 30 or so minutes doing a little work. So when the cafe is small I feel uncomfortable taking up a seat someone else could use. When it comes to the coffee I like to enjoy exceptional coffee. While most of what I experience is good coffee, and I like it, I am finding more and more that I move away from some particular coffees.

I have found myself gravitating to a smaller handful of cafes that I feel comfortable in closer to home. Partly as I have spent more than a few days getting around purely on the bike. But also partly because I just want to get some work done without feeling like I need to vacate the table for other customers.

Either way, I think that everyone has their reason for visiting the cafes that they do. Sometimes it is the space, sometimes it is the coffee and sometimes it is the people. Most importantly is that you enjoy where you get your coffee. So it is time to get into the spots I shared this week, and I do have a couple of favourites in here.

B + C Lab Cafe

Location – 31 Musk Street, Kelvin Grove, QLD

Coffee – Five Senses

Coffee - B + C Lab Cafe

B + C Lab Coffee is a spot that came to my attention through Instagram. I watched I think from when they opened and planned to find time to get over to the area to check them out. It was worth the trip to enjoy some coffee here from Five Senses and the nice atmosphere in the cafe. While I did see some rather interesting looking layered cakes in the cabinet I was a little early to eat so had to pass (I follow an intermittent fasting plan).

Passiontree Velvet

Location – Westfield Carindale, 1151 Creek Rd, Carindale QLD

Coffee – Own Blend

Coffee - Passiontree Velvet

I am a very regular visitor to the Westfield Carindale Shopping Centre and pass all the cafes in the centre frequently. However, I have not yet visited them all, but I decided to stop and try the coffee at Passiontree Velvet one morning. I am not sure who exactly roasts the coffee, and while I enjoyed it, there are other options if you are looking for a coffee. Kind of what I spoke about in the introduction, it is coffee, but maybe it is more suited to milk coffees.

Le Bistro

Location – 75 Cambridge Parade, Manly, QLD

Coffee –

Coffee - Le Bistro

One morning out and about in the Manly area and I decided to try a new little spot that had opened for coffee. Le Bistro is part of the Place Real Estate Office and has a rather nice look to it. I don’t think you can normally sit inside, but over the warm weeks of summer they seemed to be making an exception. A nice cup of coffee, but somehow I forgot to stop and find out just who roasts the beans.

Tighty Whities

Location – 160 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, QLD

Coffee – Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters

Coffee - Tighty Whities

There is a small story behind visiting this cafe, which begins with it being just the second cafe I have visited in Ipswich. However, the name of the cafe is not what I was expecting. It turns out that the cafe had recently changed owners and Google Maps was not yet updated. So it was only after the fact when we were sitting here that I realised it was now called Tighty Whities and not Nourish Real Food Cafe. Either way I was happy with the coffee from Toby’s Estate, a roaster that I enjoy drinking, but do not come across quite so often.

Frankee & Co.

Location – 5/63-65 Springwood Rd, Springwood QLD

Coffee – Bear Bones Specialty Coffee

Coffee - Frankee & Co

On the day that I visited Frankee & Co, there was something that must have been leading me here. I had planned to visit a different coffee shop and for some reason decided to take a different route and end up here instead. There was something pulling me here though as it turned out that as I walked to the counter a friend was behind the counter serving. It was nice to catch up, just unfortunate it was through serving me coffee instead of sharing coffee. The coffee here is quite good as well and comes from a favourite of mine Bear Bones Specialty Coffee

Saturday, 24th March 2018

Dramanti Artisan Roaster

Location – 3/471 Lytton Road, Morningside, QLD

Coffee – In-house Roasting

Coffee - Dramanti Artisan Roaster

When it comes to local coffee roasters, Dramanti Artisan Roaster is right up here at the top of my list. They have some great coffee on offer and the best place to get it is right here at their roastery cafe in Morningside. Having visited quite a number of times I keep going back to the nice ambience and the friendly faces. The coffee is very good as well with a rotating selection of single origins alongside their Tingal Blend.

Sunday’s Cafe

Location – 59 Brooke St, Rocklea, QLD

Coffee – Veneziano

Coffee - Sunday's Cafe

I don’t know if it was intended this way but I am going to with the pun anyway that Sundays and are meant for Sundays Cafe. It was a Sunday that I visited and found out that they had only been open two and half weeks. The cafe is the newest addition to the collective of cafes that are operated by Venzin Group across Brisbane. When it comes to the coffee they have Veneziano and it tasted quite good. Plus you might just catch that brownie in the corner of the photo it was also delicious.

Coffee

I hope that you have enjoyed this little look at my week of coffee. If there is a cafe that you think I might like to visit why not let me know about it in the comments below.

Travel Explored Week 12 Round Up

Travel Explored Week 12 Round-up

What a week the past week has been, I have been away for the first time this year and had a great time. There was plenty on the trip that I will be sharing over the coming weeks, so you have not missed out on anything. In the past, I have shared trips on a day to day basis. While I can see some good aspects of that, in this particular case I wanted to try something a little different.

For this trip, I spent two nights in Noosaville, QLD and two nights in Caloundra, QLD. Instead of sharing four or five posts, one for each day, I want to share destinations specific posts. What I mean is instead of sharing everything I did in one day, which may cover two or three different spots. I want to share each of those spots individually so that there is no getting confused about what is where.

The best example of the above is the second day that I was away recently. I spent some time in and around Noosa and Noosaville, with a trip out to Eumundi. While both of these areas are not that far apart (14km or so) they are not the same and putting them together into one post does not make sense. To share them both individually will be much more valuable to anyone looking to visit an area specifically.

Coffee, My Favourite Coworker – Week 11, 2018

Coffee - Billykart Kitchen, Annerley

The week of coffee I shared did include some great cafes around Brisbane including a new addition. The newest one on the list this week was Viva Coffee Roasters, roastery cafe at Tingalpa. One that many locals may know the name of and could be the oldest of the group is Yatala Pies. Also included was Ashton & Old, Cambridge Lane Espresso, Billykart Kitchen, Degani and Allpress.

A Drive Through Jacobs Well and Surrounds

Jacobs Well - View

Sometimes it is nice to take a little drive and visit an area that you don’t go to all the time. That is what I recently did with a visit to the area around Jacob’s Well. I have been out this way on some occasions before, but it is some time since I last visited. It is a rather nice area to go with the family for a picnic or BBQ, so something for others to keep in mind.

When Great Planning Falls Apart

When Great Planning Falls Apart

The reality is that not everything always goes just to plan, sometimes things just do not work as you expect. That is precisely what happened when I booked a trip to New Zealand and at the last moment realised I got some things wrong. Not only that but found out I wanted to change more while on the road. That is after planning everything in a single sitting and thinking it was all just right.

5 Tips to Start Using Your Camera More

Even the cheapest of digital cameras are designed to be used and if you keep it in a bag at home that is the last thing that is going to happen. But especially if you have gone and spent thousands of dollars on a camera, you need to find the motivation to use it. I have a few tips for you in this post that might help you either get motivated or find a way to start using your camera more.

Booking A Hotel? Do Your Research!

Booking A Hotel? Do Your Research!

When it comes to travelling, there is a good chance that one of your most significant costs is going to be your hotel. All of the different booking sites like to make you think they are the best option. But you still need to put in some work yourself if you want to be sure you are getting the best deal. That includes checking out the price directly from the hotel at the same time.

A Short Visit to Ipswich, QLD

Ipswich - St Paul's Anglican Church

Unlike my post earlier in the week about Jacobs Well, Ipswich is an area that I have not visited much at all. So when I found a reason to go for a visit I took a short walk and checked out a couple of the heritage places in the area. While this post does just cover a tiny part of the city, I think that a return visit will be on the cards very soon.

What I am Reading

One thing I like to include for you are a few posts that I have read over the past week. Always happy to check out other peoples posts so please feel free to drop me a link in the comments or via the contact page.

Exploring the Golden Circle Iceland in Winter: first time visitor’s guide

Iceland is one of the countries that I very much wish I had more time in to explore more than I did. The Golden Circle was one of the area’s I did get to visit, and while it was not winter when I visited, it was also far from summer. I think that there would be benefits to visiting at both times, but some of the points they make in this post are also good.

If York The Best UK City Break Destination For Families

Ok so I may not be travelling with a family of any sort, but the UK is another country that interests me when it comes to exploring. So I am happy to look at other people’s perspectives on exploring with or without a family. Looking through this post there does look to be a lot of potential for the area, so I am going to have to do a little more looking.

How to Travel Cheap: The Ultimate Guide To Traveling When You Have No Money

Travel is something that tends to cost a lot of money and can cost even more when you are travelling alone. But this post does have some interesting ideas about how to bring down or offset some of those costs. Not saying that it has solved all of the problems of the costs of travelling but well worth taking a look.

Thank You

I hope that you have enjoyed the roundup this week. As usual, I would be keen to get any feedback that you might like to give. Whether that is suggesting a post, I might like to read on yours or another blog, or about any of my posts. So please feel free to leave a comment below.

Bookings Feature

Booking A Hotel? Do Your Research!

Booking A Hotel? Do Your Research!

There is no doubt that the internet has made it easier than ever to find and compare hotel deals. But the real question is how do you know you are truly getting the best deal?

At different times there have been periods where you could rely on one source being the best deal. But now almost more than ever I have found that the tried and true sites are not always providing the best deals. While booking some nights away recently this became apparent to me more than ever.

Previous Bookings at Hotels.com

In the past, I have booked many hotels with Hotels.com. The two reasons why I booked with Hotels.com was their reward program and they generally did offer the best price I could find. It was only on a rare occasion that I would find a better price on another reputable website.

Often in the past, even some small differences are justified as a result of their reward program. The program gives one free night for every ten nights booked to the average value of the nights booked. Essentially meaning that you get a 10% discount on your stay, you just have to use it for a future stay.

But the thing that I find with this is you are locked into how you use that discount or future credit. Plus if you only happen to book eight nights now, depending on when you book again it can be a long time waiting for that.

Doing The Research

In the past when I was travelling I did some research but soon fell into using Hotels.com for everything. But recently I have been taking some time to do a little more research again and found it to be rather valuable.

I was booking 2-nights in Noosa and 2-nights in Caloundra and decided to do my research. It is a good idea when you have not been doing bookings for a little while to do this in my experience. Something that I am very glad I considered on this occasion.

2-nights In Noosa

I found a hotel in Noosa on Hotels.com which was listed for the specific nights as AUD$288.00. I was quite happy with the price but decided to see what the hotel was offering by booking directly with them. The price for the exact same nights in the exact same type of room direct with the hotel came to AUD$248.00. A saving of AUD$40.00, or around 14% cheaper. That saving is essentially two or more meals while staying there, which is considerable.

2-nights in Caloundra

I found a very similar story when booking my nights in Caloundra. On Hotels.com the room was listed at AUD$303 for the two nights I wanted. After the above experience, I was ready to do the same check. The exact same nights in the exact same type of room direct with the hotel came to AUD$272.00. A saving of AUD$31.00, or a little over 10% cheaper. That will also cover a good portion of the meals while staying in Caloundra.

Total Savings

In total for the four nights away I will be saving a total of $71.00 on the accommodation. As I mentioned that is basically going to cover the main meal each day while I am away. Although I will admit that I could have secured almost the same price by booking with a discount coupon on the 2-nights in Caloundra. But I would prefer to book directly with the hotel in a case like this.

Do Your Research

So the question that I want you to ask yourself is rather simple. Is an extra few minutes worth saving 10-14% on your booking? While maybe you might save nothing, you could also potentially save more than that. So if you have been just using the same site because it is conveinient, it might be time to do your research.

Around Brisbane Feature

A Drive Through Jacobs Well and Surrounds

Jacobs Well - View

When you start to look around the city you live in there is a good chance that you spend a lot of your time in the city. However, when you look just outside the city area, you are likely to find that there are little pockets that you might have never visited. While there are some areas like this for me, I have managed to discover many more areas then other people might. Partially from being a photographer but also a hobby of mine called Geocaching.

Today I wanted to share one of those areas with you that might be a little drive from Brisbane but has some beautiful aspects to it. That area has a few small hamlets in it such as Cabbage Tree Point and Jacobs Well. While many locals and tourists alike may have spotted the names on the exits signs from the highway, I wonder just how many have visited the area. I took a morning and went for the drive to get some photos and share with you a little more.

Cabbage Tree Point

If you are heading off the highway to Jacobs Well, there is a small detour you can take through Cabbage Tree Point. You do specifically have to turn off, so it can be easy to miss it. The area is a small community of around 440 residents and during the week when I visited seems quite peaceful.

Cabbage Tree Point

There is a waterfront area here with a beach, playground and picnic area. I think it could get busy on weekends or holidays, but I have not been here in these times to know. There is also a boat ramp here that would allow access to the channels between the islands here.

Cabbage Tree Point

There is one small shop which seems to cover a little bit of everything. So if you come unprepared for a bite to eat or a coffee, you can probably get sorted here.

Cabbage Tree Point

Horizon Shores Marina

After leaving Cabbage Tree Point and continuing towards Jacobs Well, I made a stop at Horizon Shores Marina. The stop was because I knew about the cafe here and it was time for a coffee. The marina is one of the largest in Australia with over 500 wet berths, along with dry and trailer storage available. You can find out more on the Horizon Shores Marina Website.

The Anchorage Cafe - View

The Anchorage Cafe

The Anchorage Cafe

The Anchorage Cafe is a perfect spot to come for a relaxing cup of coffee or bite to eat while you are in the area. I have stopped by a couple of times, and with an outlook to the boats in the berths, it can give you a different point of view. It is not all that close to home but can be a perfect spot to get a little writing done at times.

Jacobs Well

The final stop along the drive for me today was at the waterfront at Jacobs Well. The area does have a nice feel to it and is somewhat similar to Cabbage Tree Point. There is a little higher population here with around 1800 residents, and there are a few more cafes and shops here as well.

Jacobs Well - View

Like Cabbage Tree Point there are some beautiful spots for a picnic or BBQ along the waterfront. There is also a boat ramp that does seem to be much more popular for putting boats in the water. However, with the proximity, I think your access to the waterways will be very similar.

Jacobs Well - Picnic Spot

The Drive

Much of the rive between Cabbage Tree Point, Jacob’s Well and the highway sugar cane farms surround you. There is a sugar mill in the area which is privately owned, but I would imagine processes much of the sugarcane grown locally. In addition, there are prawn farms here, but you need to head off the main roads to find them.

Jacobs Well - Cane Field

Come For A Drive

The area is rather beautiful to take a drive to from Brisbane, especially if you have not been before. You will find some nice options to stop for a coffee in The Anchorage Cafe or a couple of other cafes in Jacobs Well. You can also pack your picnic or find a spot to get fish and chips along the way. But I would urge you to take the drive sooner than later if you have not been, as there is much talk of significant developments down this way. While it might be part of progress, it will be sure to alter the character of the area.

Coffee Feature

Coffee, My Favourite Coworker – Week 11, 2018

Coffee - Billykart Kitchen, Annerley

The vast majority of younger people working in a cafe or coffee shop may not consider the position as long term. For the most part, it is a great way to get the first job or to get a steady income while working on their studies.

The reality is that starting out as a barista or waitstaff can lead to a whole lot more. For those who are interested, it is entirely possible to make a career out of working with coffee. You do not have to be a barista forever, but it depends on where you are working and how open you are to opportunity.

Even the idea of owning a cafe should not be something that is out of the question. But it is something that is well worth researching in depth before jumping in head first. With so many cafes around the process of opening one is rather straightforward. But always remember that while it might be straightforward, it is never easy. It will require a lot of hard work to get the results.

Ashton & Old

Location – 5/459 Old Cleveland Road, Camp Hill, QLD.

Coffee – Veneziano

Coffee - Ashton & Old, Camp Hill

Ashton & Old is a cafe that I have visited a couple of times and find it is quite a lovely setting. Although like many spots I find myself driving past more often than stopping. Partially because it is on the main road and I often think about it after I have already driven past. They do serve up some rather nice coffee from Veneziano Coffee Roasters. Along with some nice little touches like some of the plants that are for sale on the tables.

Cambridge Lane Espresso

Location –  61 Cambridge Parade, Manly, QLD.

Coffee – Genovese

Coffee - Cambridge Lane Espresso, Manly

Cambridge Lane Espresso brings laneway cafe style to the small area of Manly Harbour Village. The cafe does have two entrances, one on either side of a travel agent off the street. You can take the laneway which leads to the side entrance and a selection of laneway tables. Alternatively, there is the main door which takes you through the tables inside. They serve up coffee from Genovese a coffee that I have come to enjoy, which is one reason why I keep coming back to this spot in Manly.

Viva Coffee Roasters

Location – 2/184 New Cleveland Road, Tingalpa, QLD

Coffee – Roasted In House

Coffee - Viva Coffee Roasters

Viva Coffee Roasters is fairly new to the coffee scene in Brisbane and it was only by a chance message from a friend that I discovered them. It was all around a little coffee event that they put on called An Evening With The Roaster. The night started out with a coffee, which I gave their Columbian Decaf a try since it was later in the day. It was a nice coffee and I was still able to go to bed and sleep that night. You can find the post with my full story about the even here.

Billykart Kitchen

Location – 1 Eric Cres, Annerley, QLD.

Coffee – Campos

Coffee - Billykart Kitchen, Annerley

Somehow Billykart Kitchen had managed to escape my notice. I think that it is just outside the areas that I often travel and the map had just not got in quite the right spot. But I found the cafe and had made plans to visit. However, at the cafe before heading here, I was talking to the barista and asked about good cafes nearby. It turns out this was her recommendation and used to be her daily spot for coffee. Such a small world with coincidences like that. Oh yes, the coffee, I cannot forget about that. It came from Campos and was great to finish off the morning.

Degani

Location – Hyperdome Shopping Centre, Bryants Road, Loganholme, QLD

Coffee – Degani

Coffee - Dagani, Loganholme

Although there are quite a few cafes to choose from at the Hyperdome, I always find myself drawn back to Degani. While they do seem to be quite a big chain of cafes in Victoria, in Queensland they only have a few locations. The coffee is quite good, and that is kind of why I go here instead of some of the other options locally.

Saturday, 17th March 2018

Yatala Pies

Location – 28 Old Pacific Highway, Yatala, QLD.

Coffee – Unknown

Coffee - Yatala Pies, Yatala

I must say that I did not some for the coffee when I decided to stop into Yatala Pies. As you might have guessed by the name, it is a pie shop. For those not from the area, it is quite possibly the biggest and most popular pie shop in South East Queensland. So I was here to try their apple pie and decided to grab a coffee while I was there. I cannot even recall if I could see what the coffee was, but it was rather ordinary. As for the apple pie (my weakness), it was quite good and a decent size for the price.

Sunday, 18th March 2018

Allpress

Location – 26 Wellington Road, East Brisbane, QLD.

Coffee – Allpress

Coffee - Allpress, Woolloongabba

Allpress coffee is a brand of coffee that I only discovered when I visited a cafe at New Farm. That cafe was Mylk + Ko, and I quite enjoyed the coffee and the idea behind Allpress when I looked a little deeper. So I was somewhat interested to stop in and give it a try when I spotted Allpress was opening a cafe in Woolloongabba. It is a great space and one that I know I will be visiting whenever I get a chance. Just to bad that they only open on weekdays.

Coffee, My Favourite Coworker

I am sure that a lot of us share a coffee with a co-worker or friend at work from time to time. So I would like to know what is your goto when it comes to coffee? Do you take the easy route and have an instant coffee or do you take a moment to head to the nearby coffee shop for a proper coffee?

Travel Explored Week 11 Round Up

Travel Explored - Week 11 Round Up

When it comes to coffee there are many ways in which I think it fits in with travel quite well. It could be something about the wide variety of coffees that are out there or maybe the number of exotic destinations that it can come from. But when you put that altogether there is an almost endless potential for the ways in which you can enjoy coffee.

In some ways drinking coffee, or at least some coffee is kind of like travelling. You can select that single origin from some far-off countries like Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Guatemala or Kenya. You are essentially choosing to try and sample the flavour that country brings to the coffee. Of course, there is going to be some level of the interaction that other parts of the supply chain that can alter that flavour. But essentially the bean does bring a lot to the party.

There is also any number of different experiences that you can have when it comes to coffee. In the past, I have attended events where you could experience the cupping process or a sensory workshop. But in the post I shared on Tuesday I take you through a new event I had the opportunity to attend, An Evening With The Roaster. While I have seen a coffee roaster operating before, this event covered a little more in-depth about how the process works. Definitely, one to check out if you are interested in the whole chain of coffee.

But of course there is also a number of travel-related posts this week, so please take a look below if you have missed anything. I do hope that you are enjoying the content that I am sharing and would love any feedback you wish to provide in the comments below.

The evening kicked off at around 6 pm and we spent two hours, cupping nine coffees. The cupping was followed by choosing a selection of three single origins to be included in a coffee blend. The evening finished with the blend being roasted and getting a bag of coffee to take home.

What Happens When You Miss A Port?

When you go cruising the there is a good chance you will get to visit everywhere you are expecting to go. I cannot recall the number of times that I passed through security at various points in my travel before thinking that there has to be a better way. The chances of losing something are so high and there are a few simple things you can do that might help you to not lose anything. But it all comes down to being prepared and that can take just a couple of minutes extra. However, you will be glad you did when you get to your destination with everything you are expecting to.

What I am Reading

20 Stunning Photos That Will Make You Want To Travel

I must admit that there was not a whole lot of reading in this one. It was though a little inspiring as there were a couple of destinations that I have visited. But there was also quite a number that are on my list of places that I would still love to visit in the future.

The World’s Most Spectacular Bridges

I think that maybe I should have changed the name of the section this week to what I am looking at. But this post did catch my attention with the first picture of the reflected stone bridge. There are a couple of bridges in here that I do remember visiting and/or walking across. Unfortunately, none of the scary looking ones though that you feel might not quite be that safe.

What Are The Must Visit Cities In Italy?

I am always interested to see other people’s perspective on cities and countries that I have visit. While I have not exactly visit Italy in depth, I have visited half the cities on this list. While I would love to return to Venice and Rome, I am not so sold on Naples. The other three cities could be on a future list for me though.

I would like to thank you for stopping by and reading through the blog. If you have found anything that I share interesting or useful please consider sharing it with your friends. If you have anything that you think I would be interested in reading feel free to leave a comment below.

Around Brisbane Feature

Cleveland Point to Victoria Point on the Bike

Eddie Santagiuliana Way

At times when you start writing a post you just never know where it is going to end up. I started writing this post around the middle of February. However, it ended up somewhere over 3,000 words with a significant number of photos. For me, that just seemed too long, as I like to give you smaller bite-sized posts that you can easily read in one sitting.

As such the post has turned into four posts, of which you have likely already seen three. The first post started out as the introduction, but I only shared this late last week. That post was called “Getting On The Bike & Peddling My Way Through 2018.” In this post, I share a little about why I am pushing to get on the bike a little more.

The other two posts I shared a couple of weeks ago and are mainly the bookends to this post. The first is “Wandering Around Cleveland Point” where I started this ride. With the second being “A Walk Around The Point at Victoria Point” where I finished this ride.

The Details

The ride that I am outlining here covers a large segment of a ride that I did complete while waiting for repairs on my car. I started the segment from Cleveland Point and followed the roads and cycleway through to Victoria Point. The total distance that I covered was 17 km, with the time around 2 hours, which included stopping for the photos.

From Cleveland Point, I followed Shore St North in a southerly direction and joined the Moreton Bay Cycleway. I followed the cycleway through Cleveland and most of Thornlands, before diverting onto Cleveland Redland Bay Road. I followed a path which goes around behind a new development at Thornlands onto Beveridge Road. At the end of Beveridge Road, a bridge crosses Eprahpah Creek, and I continued through to Colburn Avenue and onto Victoria Point Reserve.

What You See Along The Way

There is quite a bit to see along the way along with what you get to look at around the two points. There are plenty of places to stop, in parklands and bushland. The only thing missing along the route described above is any shops. So it is a good idea to be stocked up with water and if you want snacks or food for the trip before leaving.

Courthouse Restaurant

Cleveland Point - Courthouse Restaurant

The Courthouse Restaurant is a part of Cleveland’s history dating back to its construction in 1853. The building had numerous uses including as a courthouse for a period from 1859 combined with some other functions. At some point, the elements damaged the building and finally in 1961 had a partial restoration with an extension added in 1978. Today the current owners operate it has a restaurant, which I have visited twice for different events.

The Grandview Hotel

Cleveland Point - Grand View Hotel

The Grand View Hotel is another part of Cleveland’s Heritage that you will pass as you head towards Victoria Point. The pub has been operating since some time in the 1850’s or 60’s, although there are some differences in the accounts I can find. The venue is somewhat popular and at times can attract huge crowds. In 1992 the building was added to the Queensland Heritage Register.

Fig Tree

Cleveland Point - Banyan Fig Tree

There is a huge Banyan Fig Tree which is just next to the Grand View Hotel. It is listed as being Queensland’s Oldest Fig and has some extensive root systems which make it rather interesting. The site behind the fig has been under some contention as developers want to build, but people would prefer the fig left as is.

On the Trail

After following the water for a little way, some of the route takes to concrete pathways passing through some beautiful sections of bushland. The path here is specifically between the Wharf St carpark off Middle Street and the Oyster Point Park.

Oyster Point Park

The first spot that can be nice to stop at the Oyster Point Park. The distance from Cleveland Point is right around 3 kilometres, and there are numerous facilities here. Including playground for children, toilets and picnic tables.

Moreton Bay Cycleway Signage

Along the way you will find some signage for the Moreton Bay Cycleway. The cycleway does not go all the way to Cleveland Point, but following the above directions, you will spot it along the way. However, disappointingly there is somewhat limited signage, and I would not want to be relying on it.

Eddie Santagiuliana Way

A significant section of the pathway between Cleveland and Thornlands is named Eddie Santagiuliana Way. The path has been named in honour of the service that Eddie Santagiuliana provided to the community, as a member of the community, councillor and mayor.

Goleby Esplanade Foreshore

Another section of the path passes through the Goleby Esplanade Foreshore. This area is quite lovely with some great views of Moreton Bay.

Pinklands Bushland Reserve

In years past you would have continued along Cleveland Redland Bay Road towards Victoria Point. However, in the last couple of years, a new development at the southern end of Thornlands has included a new path. The path takes you along the side of Pinklands Bushland Reserve and around the back of the new development.

Eprapah Creek

The spot below needs a small detour off the main cycleway but is worth a look. At the end of Beveridge Road, as you continue along the pathway, there is a sign directing you to a fishing platform. It is only about 200m, and this is where you end up. A great little sidetrack.

Cameron Court Park

After getting back on the main cycleway, you will cross Eprapah Creek to arrive at a largish Parkland name Cameron Court Park. The area has a playground and half-court basketball, with a dog off leash park when you get to the other end.

Victoria Point Alternatives

When you reach Victoria Point, there are a couple of alternate routes you can take. I chose to follow Colburn Avenue to Victoria Point Reserve, having already ridden some distance before starting this ride. However, you can also choose to detour via Point OHalloran Road and Orana Esplanade where you follow the waterfront. Or you can take a short detour off Colburn Avenue to Thompsons Beach. I won’t include either of these here and will look to share a little more about both options in future posts.

Considerations For Your Ride

If you were interested in undertaking a similar ride yourself, there are one or two things you might like to consider. The first is that the distance I covered was one way. So if you drive to either end and park, you will need to cover twice the distance to get back to the car. In saying that there are a couple of spots you could cut off a little distance for the return trip.

The second thing is around the Moreton Bay Cycleway, which I used as part of this ride. What is shown on their website is somewhat out of date. The physical signage along the route now directs you differently to the online map. The most prominent difference is that you no longer need to ride along the road at Cleveland Redland Bay Road. New paths and infrastructure have changed this to make the journey a little safer especially for this riding with children. If possible, I would suggest having access via your phone to online maps just in case you get lost.

Enjoy The Ride

One of the most important things about a ride like this is that you take the time to enjoy it. As you can see from the distance and the time, I might have covered 17km, but I took two hours to do so. That is just 8.5km an hour which is only about double the speed of regular walking.

Viva Coffee Roasters – An Evening With The Roaster

Viva Coffee Roasters - Cooling Tray

You might have noticed over the past couple of months that I have an interest in coffee. From the daily stops that I make for coffee through to a couple of events that I have shared. When a friend shared a post from Viva Coffee Roasters about a little coffee event I was quite interested. The event was called An Evening With The Roaster, and it had my attention.

The event took place on Thursday the 8th of March and was made up of two main parts. The first part was a coffee cupping session where we cupped nine different single origin coffee’s. With the second part of the night a look at the roasting process and roasting a unique coffee blend from our choice through the cupping session.

Viva Coffee Roasters - Coffee Machine

The Cupping

I have had the opportunity now to attend a few different cupping sessions at a couple of different coffee roasters. While there are slight differences with each roaster, the process is quite similar. Coffee Cupping is a process is undertaken to observe the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee. The process is done professionally by people known as Q Graders and coffee roasters but can be done informally by anyone.

From the perspective of a coffee roaster, the process is undertaken to identify the individual tastes and aromas of a specific single origin coffee bean. The observations of the cupping than allow them to combine particular beans to create a particular blend including the tastes they are looking seeking.

Below you can see the cupping table prepared for the evening at Viva Coffee Roasters. On the Table is nine different single origin coffee beans from a variety of countries and regions. These included coffee beans from Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Nicaragua, Guatemala and four from Colombia.

Viva Coffee Roasters - Cupping Table

Cupping Process

Coffee Cupping is not an overly technical process but has a few important steps. With it being an important part of the coffee roasting processing to help ensure a consistent blend over time. The roasted single origin beans are ground in a certain amount into a cup before they are covered in hot water. They are allowed to brew for around four minutes before a crust will form on the top of the coffee.

Viva Coffee Roasters - Cupping Process

At the four-minute mark, you will break the crust and take a smell of the coffee as you do, looking for what aromas you can detect. The crust is then removed, and you take a small spoonful of coffee and slurp it into your mouth. The slurping action helps ensure that the coffee reaches all parts of your palate to give a better sense of the tastes and flavours of the coffee.

Viva Coffee Roasters - Cupping Process

The biggest discovery that I have made personally from the cupping process is more on a personal note than anything around coffee. I have found that I either have a rather underdeveloped palate or a very difficult time identifying any particular flavour. I do not think that this is all that uncommon, as in general being able to identify a wide variety of individual tastes can take some work.

Creating A Blend

Through the cupping process, we discovered the tastes and flavours of the coffee on the table. At this point, it was up to us to choose the coffee beans which would go into our coffee blend. The process for our session followed along from choosing the flavours that we would like to combine from the single origins that we had cupped. I do think that the process of creating a coffee blend usually takes on a lot more detailed work in the normal process of coffee roasting. But it was a sufficient method to follow for our session to simplify the process a little.

There were three beans which were chosen for our blend. They included the Ethiopian at 40%, the Colombia Florida at 40% and Guatemala at 20%.

The Roasting Process

Viva Coffee Roasters - Green Beans

Even with all of the detail that was provided, I am still not even close to being able to adequately describing what happens in the roasting process. However, what I can say is that the process takes green coffee beans, heats them up and the product is the brown coffee beans you are used to seeing at the coffee shop. There is obviously a whole lot more to the process. Including a lot of detail and knowledge that go into preparing the coffee and roaster for the process. But you might just have to watch for a similar event being held to find out all the details.

Viva Coffee Roasters - Preparing The Coffee Roaster

The coffee spent about 15 minutes in the coffee roaster. The roast is a medium roast which sits somewhere between the first and second crack stage of roasting. There are two more stages at this point. The first is the cooling which you can see below, where all the heat is drawn out of the beans. The final step is for the roasted coffee to go through a machine that removes anything that is not a coffee bean. Helping to ensure that all you get in the bag is the roasted coffee bean.

Viva Coffee Roasters - Cooling Tray

You can buy Happiness Blend

Viva Coffee Roasters - You Can Buy Happiness

The final result of the evening was a bag of the coffee blend we created to take home. As such we had to choose a name for the coffee blend we have created. With some inspiration coming from the label on the takeaway cups at Viva Coffee. So the name for the blend came out as “You can buy Happiness.”

A Great Event

The night was an excellent chance to see a little behind the scenes of coffee roasting. It is a great way to gain a better understanding and appreciation of what goes into your cup of coffee. I would highly recommend an event like this if you have more than a passing interest in coffee. Getting to see the whole process is rather interesting and informative. At this stage, I am unsure what plans for these events in the future are for Viva Coffee Roasters. But if you are interested in an event like this, you can find their contact details on the Viva Coffee Website.

Thank you for taking the time to read along. If you enjoyed this post please consider sharing it with your network. If you have any questions you can leave them below in the comments and I will be in touch.

Coffee, Break Fluid – Week 10, 2018

Coffee - Banter Coffee House, Manly

Last week I discussed the topic of just how much I pay for my coffee. A topic that has brought to my mind another interesting little thought when it comes to price. The issue seems to be more pertinent to those who drink a long black over other drinks in a cafe.

That is the difference in price between different size drinks. It specifically caught my attention around the time when I first started drinking a long black. I could get a long black in a cup which had two shots of coffee in or I could get a long black in a mug which had two shots of coffee in. The only difference between the two sizes was around 50ml of water. Yet in the cafe that I frequently visited at the time, it would cost me an additional $1.10 to get that larger size.

I can understand a different charge for a mug over a cup when the drink uses milk as there is an additional cost. Or in an instance where a cup might use a single shot of coffee over a mug using two shots of coffee. But when the only difference is a small amount of water it makes no sense to pay more. Ever since I have only ever ordered a long black in a cup.

Bioney Cafe

Location – 8/381 Main Road, Wellington Point, QLD

Coffee – Delamuata Handcrafted Coffee

Coffee - Bioney Cafe, Wellington Point

I have had a chance to visit Bioney Cafe a couple of times now and it is a nice little spot right in Wellington Point. While it is in a very prominent location, you have to kind of specifically be going there to know about it as well.

The location used to be the home of Delamauta Handcrafted Coffee and is still the coffee that they use. I gave the single origin a try for my visit and it was rather interesting. It was one coffee that I almost immediately picked up a particular smell but could not put my finger on what it was.

The Daily Coffee Co.

Location – 293 Queens Street, Brisbane, QLD

Coffee – Neighbourhood Coffee Roasters

Coffee - The Daily Coffee Co., Brisbane

I do not get into the Brisbane CBD all that often and I would say half the time it is on a weekend when many cafes are closed. So when I do go during the week I try and maximise my time and get to a number of coffees shops. I had been planning a few others on the day that I went to The Daily Co. It just happened to be right next to the bank where I had to go first but I was too early for. They are serving up a coffee I discovered early last year called Neighbourhood Espresso. The Neighbourhood Espresso Roastery is also a great spot to go, but this newish venue in the city is also great.

Station 82

Location – 82 Hyde Road, Yeronga, QLD.

Coffee – Establishment Coffee

Coffee - Station 82, Yeronga

There are all different reasons why people visit cafes, for me it is a case that I would like to try as many as I can. For my visit to Station 82 though the thing that caught my eye was the bright red coffee machine. Also I do quite enjoy The Establishment Coffee as it is rather strong and generally has tasted good when I have had it.

Poppy’s On Bloom

Location – 1/66 Bloomfield Street, Cleveland, QLD.

Coffee – Metro Coffee

Coffee - Poppy's On Bloom, Cleveland

Cleveland has an abundance of choice when it comes to cafes. There is a whole mix from big busy cafes down to the small and friendly cafes. Poppy’s On Bloom, is on the smaller side, but they have a great location right next to the park on Bloomfield Street. The great part is that because of the way they face even in the morning you do not get the sun beating down on you even sitting outside.

Banter Coffee House

Location – 1/190 Radford Road, Manly West, QLD

Coffee – Roast By Yili

Coffee - Banter Coffee House, Manly

It was kind of a funny story the first time that I visited Banter Coffee House. The day was just after the first time that I came across Roast By Yili in a cafe. It seemed like a interesting coincidence and I made comment on the fact. Comparing notes soon I found out the cafe I had been to the day before was in fact also owned by the same people that own Banter Coffee House. The other cafe was Deedot located at Holland Park.

Since that first visit to Banter Coffee House I have come back a number of times. Both because the coffee is nice, but also the staff are friendly and welcoming.

The Coffee Door

Location – 2/5-7 Gordon Street, Ormiston, QLD.

Coffee – Delamauta Handcrafted Coffee

Coffee - The Coffee Door, Ormiston

The coffee door is another one of those cafes that I often passed but never visited. It is kind of in one of those locations that you unless you are going to the place specifically you do not think about always. But it is well worth taking the time to stop and visit if you can. To start they have some rather good coffee, but they also have some nice looking treats in the cabinet. I would personally recommend the Gluten Free Brownie, but there are a number of other options that look good as well.

The Garden Grind

Location – Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre, Upper Mount Gravatt, QLD.

Coffee – Merlo Coffee

Coffee - The Garden Grind, Mount Gravatt

When it comes to visiting a cafe I must say that I do prefer stand alone cafes, that are mostly enclosed. By that I mean a cafe that I can go inside and sit down and other then people visiting the cafe it is pretty quite. So generally I don’t go looking for cafes like The Garden Grind. When the seating is essentially in the middle of the walkway in a shopping centre it just gets to busy. The main reason I stopped by here was just to change things up a little, and it was rather early so very few people passing by.

Coffee, Break Fluid

I would be interested to know your thoughts on the title’s of these posts. Such as today’s title that is “Coffee, Break Fluid”. I am trying to use a short catchy coffee phrase each time, but do wonder if that is a good or bad thing. If you could leave me a thought in the comments below on this subject I would very much appreciate it.

Travel Explored Week 10 Round Up

Travel Explored Week 10 Round-up

The past week has definitely been a little different. I have still been working towards getting back into a regular flow with my new MacBook Pro. While also facing challenges with the weather that has been passing through Brisbane recently.

In some ways, the change of computer is something that I have been in preparation for over a longer term. Not because I specifically knew I would be getting a new computer at any point. But what I wanted to do was try and move away from my reliance on using a single computer.

Earlier last year I had a couple of problems one seeing me without the computer for two days. While it was not the end of the world and I had backups, I found that too much of what I was working on was tied up on one computer. So since that time, I have moved much of my writing work into cloud storage I can access from anywhere.

But I suppose I am getting a little too far into detail for an opening here, so will leave it there. It is something that I will look to elaborate on in the near future as a complete post. Becuase I think that it is something people travelling while working may be able to benefit from. But let’s get into taking a look at the new content this week and a little of what I have been reading.

There has been another great selection of coffee shops that I have shared this week, or at least I think so. Included this week was The Park Cafe, Seed Coffee, Morning After, Deb’s Coffee, The Green Room Cafe, Coconut Coffee House and Pomeroy’s. Check out the post for more details about where to find the coffee shops and a little more about each one.

Cruising & Your Mobile Phone

Cruising and Your Mobile Phone

One rather common question I hear about travelling on cruise ships is around can you use your mobile phone. So I have put together a little information about taking and using your mobile phone while onboard. The basic idea is to avoid using the phone, but there is some ways that you might be able to use it while onboard.

Taking A Wander Around Wynnum

Wynnum - Bay Terrace

Wynnum is an area that I visit somewhat regularly and is a rather nice area to take a walk around and enjoy a coffee. Settlement in the area dates back to the 1800’s and the area has a rather nice street shopping precinct. Adding to this quite a number of nice cafes with some good coffee.

Where Do You REALLY Want To Travel

Where Do You REALLY Want To Travel

I am always intrigued when I talk to people to find out where they would like to travel. Often I am surprised to find that their travel aspirations are somewhat shallow in that they either only can think of the place that was recently advertised or the closest party destination. I hope that this post does encourage a few more people to think a little deeper about where they would like to travel.

Getting On The Bike & Peddling My Way Through 2018

On The Bike - At Home

Even though riding my bike is something that I rather enjoy over the past number of years it has been something I have not done. So I have decided to set a little target to get out and ride more in 2018. I start riding more frequently in January and to date I am making good progress on my goal. You can find more details in this post.

5 Quick Travel Tips

5 Quick Travel Tips To Think About

I wanted to give you something a little lighter for the weekend and put together this quick read with five travel tips. There is nothing to groundbreaking in here, but I hope that it gives you something a little more to think about while travelling.

What I am Reading

Get Paid to Travel Around Europe Taking Photos This Summer

How could I pass up reading an article with a title like that? I had a good read and have been looking into what I need to do to apply. Because that would be a rather interesting way to spend a few months.

These Unexpected Cities Have the Best Coffee in the U.S.

I think that it has somewhat been my week for catching just the right headlines as I am looking through my feeds. The idea of a head start for where to look for the best coffee is always intriguing and this list is rather useful. Especially considering it gives me some planning ideas for the next time I head to America.

This Glass-bottom Pool Haning Over Honolulu Has the Most Breathtaking Views

Although it is not the first swimming pool to be featured hanging in the air with a glass bottom, it is one of the most open ones I have seen. Most other glass bottom pools do not seem to extend out quite as far or have more framework around them. I would find it rather interesting to give it a look, but not sure how long I would want to stand or sit over the edge.

Thank You

I hope that you have enjoyed the updates this week. If there are any topics that you would like to see me cover or share a post about, please feel free to leave a comment below.
