Getting Connected To The Internet When Travelling

Getting connected when travelling

When we are at home the idea of a permanent connection to the internet is almost a given. We have broadband internet in the house. There is 3G or 4G access via our mobile phone. Combined with Free Wifi in some of our regular or favourite spots.

On the other hand when we travel the connection is not quite as permanent and at times all but non-existent. I have experienced the challenge of trying to find reliable internet or any internet at all in many cities I have visited.

My Travelling Internet Challenges

Throughout all but one of my trips getting access to the internet has been possibly one of my greatest challenges. Of course, the fact that I did not travel with a smartphone likely did not help. But in some countries, this still would have made little difference.

Canada

On my first ever overseas trip, I spent a little to much time trying to get myself connected. I found out at the time, back in 2010, it was nearly impossible to purchase a pre-paid sim card in Canada. I tried at least ten different stores, and no one quite seemed to understand what I wanted. Internet access in the hotel cost around $30 CAD per night. But thankfully Starbucks had free internet access, and they were on every second corner.

Europe

My fourth trip overseas did not fair much better than the first. My time was split between multiple different European countries and America, so the idea of sim card went out the window. Additionally, the ease of finding free wifi in much of Europe in 2012 seemed somewhat challenging. I thankfully had managed to book most hotels with wifi included, but this does not help when you are out and about for the day.

New Zealand

My last trip to New Zealand in 2015 was a much better experience. I now own a smartphone, and at least in New Zealand, a sim card is rather easy to purchase on a one-off basis. For $50 NZD from Vodafone, I got a sim card with 3G data some included local calls and text, as well as 200 minutes and text to Australia.

South Pacific Island

Finally, my most recent trip in February 2017 was a cruise to the South Pacific Island of New Caledonia & Vanuatu. I was a little surprised how much I missed the ease of access to the internet, especially for a favourite hobby of Geocaching. I had taken steps to prepare some things for off line access, which helped a little. However, some better research on where and how to access free services could have helped.

My primary source of access to the internet was onboard the cruise ship. However, this did come at a premium price for a rather limited amount of time. I spent $99.00 (AUD) to purchase 240 minutes of access to the internet. My choice to pay the price was the result of wanting to continue giving my updates view social media. Keeping Instagram, Facebook and Twitter up to date.

Preparing Before Leaving Home

Today things are significantly different to six or seven years ago on some of my early overseas trips. I do not doubt that there are still many countries where internet access is a challenge. However, there are some ways that you can get around this challenge and make life a whole lot easier.

Research In Advance

There is not much use waiting until you arrive in a country to try and find out about potential free wifi. If you do just want to rely on free wifi take a little time and do some research before you leave home.

Some countries or cities have apps available that you can use to search for free wifi hot spots. While other areas you may be able to download a list of places.

The other thing to research in advance is the options for mobile phone services. Check with your provider at home they may offer some good international roaming options. You can likely also do a little research on the phone providers where you are travelling to as well.

You need to keep in mind if your handset works with overseas providers, though. Especially if you got your phone from the provider as part of your contract, it might be locked to their service. Which in some cases may restrict your use to other providers overseas.

Download Maps

If you are looking for internet access mainly to find your way around or discover places to visit or eat. A relatively new feature of Google maps might be useful. It is the ability to download the local maps for offline use to your mobile phone or tablet.

Downloadable Google Maps

When you have downloaded the area, the Google Maps will operate almost identical to when connected to the internet. The only exception is that it will only provide driving directions. Transit, bicycle and walking directions are not available.

If you are not sure how to download the maps, you can follow the directions provided by Google. Directions for Android, iPhone and iPad can be found at the Google Maps Help Page.

Enjoy The Holiday

In the end, though there is always one other option, and that is just to enjoy your holiday without the internet. Even though I found myself looking for access, I always managed to get by without if I had to. There is little point wasting time hunting down wifi when you could be hunting down some more exciting attractions.

Sun Princess – A Tour Of The Ship

Sun Princess - Champagne Bay

After spending ten days onboard the Sun Princess in February, I wanted to share a little of the experience on board. Unfortunately even with ten days onboard the Sun Princess I was not able to experience every space on board. But hope to provide some helpful information and photos below.

Getting Around Sun Princess

Sun Princess - Map

Map

Boarding a cruise ship is always an exciting experience. Unless you have the chance to sail on sister ships, which may have the same or similar layouts, they are all different. Maybe not to a great extent, but gaining your bearings does take a little time.

I usually take the first two or three days to get used to where the different rooms or spaces are. It can take more than a week to get my port and starboard sorted out, though. At times I have found myself totally lost even on the day before disembarking. That is why I am happy to find on most ships I have sailed maps such as the one above near to most elevators.

Atrium

Like most cruise ships the Sun Princess has a central Atrium. The Atrium is four decks high between deck 5 and deck 8, and many different spaces are in this area. All four decks are accessible by glass panoramic lifts that look out over the Atrium.

Sun Princess - Atrium

The Atrium on Deck 5 is where you will find the International Cafe and Front Desk. Moving up to Deck 6 you will find the Princess Shops, Latitudes and Reflections. On Deck 7 are the Crooners bar and dance floor. With Deck 8 containing SHARE by Curtis Stone.

International Cafe

The International Cafe is one of the spaces that I spent a lot of time while onboard. If you are looking for real barista made coffee this is where you might also find yourself. There is also a range of other cafe style drinks you can find here. Also depending on the time of day, there is a range of pastries, sandwiches and other light food.

Promenade Deck

Sun Princess - Promenade Deck

Promenade Deck

Another spot that I spent a lot of time was on the outside deck around deck 7, the Promenade Deck. The outside deck offers a complete circuit of roughly 530m in length. I made full use of this deck as a walking track doing between 15-20 laps on sea days.

Internet Cafe & Library

Sun Princess - Internet Cafe

Internet Cafe

I did not find myself using these two rooms much. The internet cafe is ideal for those who don’t want to carry a computer with them. But want the ability to get online and check email or get in touch with family at home. I brought my computer with me and as such made more use of the wifi internet available.

Sun Princess - Library

Library

The library saw minimal use by anyone on the particular cruise I was on. Due to the potential health risks of a breakout of norovirus on the previous cruise the books and such were removed as a precaution. I made a visit to the room once to have some quite time working on the computer. When the books are in place, I think it would be quite a popular place.

Photo Gallery

Sun Princess - Photo Gallery

Photo Gallery

I found the photo gallery onboard Sun Princess to be an interesting spot. In the past other ships, I have sailed on the focus has been purely on selling photos taken by the ship photographers. However, the Photo Gallery onboard offers for sale a range of basic camera’s and equipment as well. It makes it ever so slightly easier for people who might forget a battery or memory card. Or worst case find’s their camera dies and needing a quick replacement.

Let’s See A Show

There are two spaces on the Sun Princess designed for shows. The Princess Theatre located all the way forward on deck 7 and the Vista Lounge located aft on deck 7.

Sun Princess - Princess Theatre

Princess Theatre

The Princess theatre is used for a couple of different things. At times there might be a movie showing, or at night this is where you can find the production shows.

Sun Princess - Vista Lounge

Vista Lounge

The Vista Lounge has a relatively wide variety of uses throughout the day. Throughout the day there were activities such as dance classes, bingo, and other presentations. At night there were a couple of different performances.

Entertainment and Bars

The Sun Princess has plenty of different options for entertainment at night. Whether you are looking for Singing, dancing or drinking there is somewhere for you.

Sun Princess - Topsiders Bar, Terrace Grill & Poolside Bar

Topsiders Bar, Terrace Grill & Poolside Bar

Whether you are looking for a drink by the pool, a bite to eat or a drink as high on board as you can. They are stacked one on top of the other all overlooking the pool.

Sun Princess - Legends Bar

Legends Bar

The Legends Bar is where the party starts after the sun goes down. There is a DJ in here at night, either playing music, karaoke or other fun.

Sun Princess - Wheelhouse Bar Entertainment

Wheelhouse Bar Entertainment

The Wheelhouse Bar is home to some of the best entertainment onboard from my experience. At the time I was on the Sun Princess there were three different acts which performed in here. There was a solo Guitarist, A duo playing music for dancing to and a band that played pop music.

Movies Under The Stars

One of the things that I enjoyed most was watching movies out on the pool deck under the stairs. Sitting above the pool on deck 12 is a huge screen where some of the most recent release movies are played.

Something To Eat

One thing that there never seems to be a shortage of onboard is enough good food. There are essentially seven places you can find food, with a couple of other options for food as well.

Already mentioned above are the International Cafe, SHARE by Curtis Stone and Terrace Grill. Additionally, there is also the Main Dining Rooms, Starling Steakhouse, Kai Seafood and Horizon Court Buffet.

Art Everywhere

Cruise ships, in general, seem to carry an extensive art collection. Not just for the purpose of art auctions either. There is no end of blanks walls as you walk around the ship and these are used to display artworks.

Something I Missed

I can be certain that I have missed some things in this little tour around the Sun Princess. It is mostly a case of what I had the opportunity to photograph is what I can share with you. There are some area’s that I know I missed such as the Casino, The Sanctuary and the Fitness Centre. However, it seemed whenever I was near this places I either did not have the camera with me, or it did not seem appropriate. I hope that you have enjoyed this brief tour and would love to hear any feedback you may have.

Travel Explored – The Week In Review

Travel Explored Week In Review

The last week has been a rather uncertain week in Brisbane. The weather has been playing games, with random bad weather off and on all week. One moment it might rain than the sun is shining.

You might think what does the weather in Brisbane have to do with anything. Well for me right now it is playing havoc with my plans to take a short local trip.

You see I have been considering a few days around the Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane. With good weather, this will be a fantastic time to get some photos, get outdoors and maybe even get some drone footage. With inclement weather, I would be spending most of the time indoors in one way or another.

Anyway, I am keeping my eye on what the weather is doing and may be able to do something early next week. Whatever happen’s it will find it’s way onto the blog and my social media, so keep a watch. But of course this post is here to share a little of what has happened in the past week, so here we go.

When was the last time that you tried a new experience? For me, it happens much more frequently when I am travelling. Essentially new experiences are something that I have come to connect with travelling. In this post, I explore some of the new experiences I have had while travelling and hopefully might inspire you to try some as well.

For those who follow me on Instagram or Facebook, my daily coffee photos might be something that is familiar to you. In this post, I explore what got me started on seeking out different coffee shops and why I share the photos every day.

What I’m Reading

Man dies in cliff fall while geocaching south of Adelaide

Monday 13th March 2017
In the past, I have mentioned one of my hobbies on the blog, Geocaching. It was very sad to read on Monday of the death of a Geocacher near Adelaide. You can read the full story at the above link. However, it did come a little close to home, even though I have never encountered a problem, there is often that I take part in Geocaching alone.

Singapore’s SINGA’s Spirit

On some occasions, it has been suggested I consider a visit to Singapore. It is a country that is on my list, for many reasons, but just not quite at the top yet. However, I enjoyed reading a little about Singapore from Jan Sevilla on Flying Baguette.

Spend One Night On Alcatraz

I am always interested to see the different perspective other travellers might have on destinations I have visited. It was even more interesting to read about that experience on the night time tour that is now available. The visit to Alcatraz during the day is one thing but I am not sure I would go for the night tour myself.

In February I had the chance to visit some South Pacific Island’s on board the Sun Princess. I had an opportunity to capture some photos while on board and wanted to take you on a little tour around the ship.

Getting Connected When Travelling

In the past one of the most challenging aspects of travelling has been getting phone and internet access. While some countries or companies make this easy for travellers, plenty don’t. Just a little look at some of the challenges I have faced.

Daily Adventures Chasing Good Coffee

There is something that I have been doing almost every day for the last six months. It is something that many people do every single morning. Getting out there and finding a good cup of coffee.

It is not something that I just started doing in the last six months, though. I used to go out almost every day and visit a cafe. It was the same cafe every day, ironically it is in this cafe that I am writing this right now.

My Coffee

The coffee that I choose to drink is a Long Black. I like to get the flavour and body without spoiling it by adding milk or sugar. Which is why I choose Long Black over other options which are primarily made on milk.

It was early 2016 I decided to take a closer look at what I was eating and drinking and make some changes. At the time I opted for a short-term removal of all sugar from my diet. Or at least everything that I could practically remove.

One of the biggest contributors of sugar in my diet was the two chai latte’s I would drink most days. Between them, they would contribute almost 50grams of sugar each day. Some of this was natural sugar found in the milk. There was still over 20grams from the syrup used in a chai latte.

The long story, made short (no pun intended) is black coffee has become my preferred alternative.

A Different Cafe Every Day

In September 2016, I decided that I wanted to start exploring both the coffee and the venues that serve it a little deeper. I set out to try and visit a new cafe every single day. It might sound easy enough there are cafes everywhere. But, in fact, it is a whole lot harder than you might imagine and comes with a couple of challenges.

First Instagram Coffee Post

The first image I shared on Instagram as part of my daily photos.

There is a reasonable number of coffee shops without having to travel to far from home, or so I thought. The more coffee shops I visited, the more I realised there is a big difference between coffee.

I quickly eliminated the idea of visiting most chain stores. The whole concept of the chain coffee stores is creating a consistent experience. What I was looking for were coffee shops that are different, interesting and unique.

As such, there has been a rather wide variety of coffee stores that I have visited. I have visited some chain stores and got the experience I expected. There have also been some out of this world fantastic coffee shops as well. Along with many that land somewhere in between.

A Cup And A View

I made a conscious decision to record the journey and share that journey each day. I would capture a photo of my coffee along with the view that I was enjoying that day. Either the general outside atmosphere or that of the coffee shop I was visiting.

Either way each day I captured the photo and shared these images via Instagram. I quite enjoy finding a coffee shop with the best combo of great coffee and a great view. But always more than happy to settle for just some great coffee.

Coffee with a view

Always looking for a spot to have coffee with a view

Discovering Coffee

Taking the time to explore both coffee and the cafe’s that serve it, has been an enjoyable experience. When you go out to explore coffee with a purpose, you find there is so much more than what you have in a jar at home.

I cannot remember where it was. But that first time I was offered a choice between a single origin coffee and a blend was an exciting moment. Then to one day find myself at a coffee roaster to have a choice between five different coffees.

Then another great experience was discovering yet another option in the cold pressed coffee. It offers quite a different and interesting experience and one that I would happily recommend if you have a love for coffee.

Travel Is All About New Experiences

Tapas New Experience

In my opinion, travel is all about trying new experiences. Almost before you leave home travel is encouraging you to step a little bit outside your comfort zone. Pushing you to do things that you do not do every day. It is if anything a great enabler to let things go a little.

There have been many different new experiences that I have tried when travelling. I am also very much the person to encourage other’s when travelling to try new things. Often suggesting they give something ago, especially if it is not too much beyond the usual comfort zone.

As part of travelling, there are many different little things that I have tried. Or things that I have pushed a bit further than I might normally as a result. One of the biggest contributors to my new experiences was a new experience itself, cruising.

Cruising

It was late 2010, I had arrived home from my first overseas trip and could not wait to book the next trip. In fact, I was so keen that I booked return airline tickets for two months to the USA within the week I believe.

It was a couple of weeks later while I was working on the third or fourth version of a plan for a ground-based trip around America. There was, of course, no shortage of options, but I was struggling to put together something comprehensive. I am sure if I had kept working at it everything would have fallen into place eventually.

However, before I could get anything locked in, there was a suggestion about trying a cruise. I thought it sounded like a great idea and soon got lost in looking at options. I started out looking at a seven-day cruise and soon found an even better 14-day option.

The biggest problem turned out to be the price for a cabin to cruise alone. But of course, the solution was just a little more research. I come to find a 28-day Cruise Roundtrip from San Diego, through the Panama Canal. The price was right, the timing was perfectly in the middle of my trip, and it gave me a new experience.

First Cruise MS Statendam in San Diego

That new experience of travelling by cruise ship very quickly became my favourite way to travel. To date, I have travelled four times on cruise ships, for a total of 93 days. It is a new experience I can recommend. You can also read more about my first cruise 28 Day Panama Canal Cruise Summary.

Escargot

When you are travelling, especially in countries that are different to your home country the food can be a new experience. While there have been many foods just a little different, the biggest step for me was trying Escargot or snails.

Trying escargot is not something that I specifically went out searching to find. It was only by chance that circumstances aligned, and I made the decision to give it a go.

It was on my second or third cruise and one night on the menu for dinner in the main dining room escargot was offered. I initially passed over it looking at the other options on the menu, and it was all somewhat similar to other nights. It was at this point I stopped and heard that little voice, travelling is for new experiences.

So next thing I know I had ordered the Escargot. I must say that while I did not become a fan, I did not entirely dislike it either. At dinner another time on a cruise, I did order the escargot again, but that was due to lack of other options.

Tapas In Melbourne

I had another new experience in the food world when I visited Melbourne to catch up with some two friends. The one who was local to Melbourne suggested we visit a fairly popular local tapa’s bar. Of course, I was interested in trying a new experience.

We were soon seated enjoying a drink and wondering how you go about ordering Tapas here. I must say inexperience when ordering tapas can come with quite a catch. The waiter suggested he would bring us some of the favourites.

Tapas New Experiences

Another drink and ten plates of tapas later, I had definitely tried a number of new foods. I also believe the bill was another new experience. The most money I had paid for the least amount of food that I can remember. But not to worry, travel is all about new experiences.

Zip Lining

Even though I am the sort of person that loves the outdoors, bushwalking and hiking and the like. I am at the same time not an overly adventurous person. Roller coasters, skydiving and bungee jumping are things on the list I never want to try.

It was onboard the first cruise I mentioned above when I was looking at tour options in Costa Rica. There was the option to go zip lining, in the rain forest. It did not take to much consideration; it was something a little more adventurous and a new experience.

Costa Rica - Ziplining

I must say it was quite an exciting experience and one that I, would try again. But not something that moves my intentions on any of those more adventurous options from above.

I would love to hear about the new experiences that you have taken when travelling. Why not consider sharing your one of those new experiences from your travels. Just head down to the comment section below.

Deciding And Purchasing A DJI Phantom 4 Drone

DJI Phantom 4 Flight

Being a photographer, I am always keen to look at different ways that I can capture a photo. In recent years one option that has caught my attention is that of aerial photography. Primarily using a drone with a camera attached to get a much higher point of view for the photo. After much deliberation, I finally made the commitment and purchased a drone. With so many different options on the market with such a broad price point, it was not an easy decision. However, in the end, I decided on the DJI Phantom 4 for a couple of reasons.

Choosing A Drone

There are quite a large number of factors to take into consideration when purchasing a drone. While the price is often one of the biggest factors, some others are worth considering.

From my point of view, I was looking at four different questions to answer in making my decision. While each question could result in a different final choice, all together they did help me make a decision.

  • How the drone and controller worked together?
  • For what do I want to use the drone?
  • What is the quality of the footage I can capture?
  • How portable is the drone?

Below I want to take a look at how each question applied in my decision-making process. Then I will look at how each question related to my final purchase decision in buying the DJI Phantom 4

How the drone and controller worked together?

When capturing a photography or filming, I find that it is important to have some idea of the framing of the shot. The last thing you want is to do a whole lot of filming and find part of the primary target was not in the frame. Essentially, this means that the drone would need to be able to send a video signal out. Either directly to the controller or an additional display device.

Why DJI Phantom 4?

The DJI Phantom 4 is designed to work with a phone or tablet connect to the controller. While it is possible to fly it with just the controller, there is no additional benefit. By connecting my iPad mini to the DJI controller, I get a 7.9″ screen to see what the camera is seeing. Additionally, I have full control over the camera settings at any time.

What do I want to use the drone for?

The question of what do I want to use the drone for is quite easy to answer for me. All too often I find myself in areas looking to capture a photo from a perspective that I just cannot physically achieve. Sometimes it might be just out over the edge of a steep drop, or where just a couple more meters height would be ideal.

Another aspect I considered is that I want commercially use the images and video that I capture. That means that I needed to consider the laws around this as part of my research.

Why DJI Phantom 4?

Some other potential drones would fulfil my needs. However, most are not as versatile and would not always be practical always to carry around. A drone does work out to be the best solution in the majority of situations. So even though I would have in theory selected another drone but the DJI Phantom 4 was my choice.

The other consideration of meeting the laws around the commercial use of a drone is also important. In Australia, if a drone weighs more than 2kg you must be fully trained and qualified to fly your drone commercially. The CASA website has more information regarding this – Flying drones/remotely piloted aircraft in Australia.

The last point in part relates to my choice to purchase the DJI Phantom 4. The weight of the Phantom 4 is around 1.4kg, which places it in the under 2kg range. As such there are some lower guidelines to operate commercially in Australia.

What is the quality of the footage I can capture?

The whole point of purchasing the drone for me is to capture photo and video. I was immediately able to exclude some of the models available. Specifically, the models that did not have a built-in camera and anything with a fixed camera. I was looking for something that was the complete package so to say. Not something that might require additional investment to make it complete.

The other consideration is the quality of the image that will get captured. The higher the quality that you can capture the better, even if you might not use the higher quality all the time. It is better to have the facility to be able to do something and not need it, rather than find you need it and don’t have it.

Why DJI Phantom 4?

The DJI Phantom 4 can capture 4K footage. While this is something that I am not working with at the moment. It is obviously the direction that video especially will be going and having the facility to capture 4K will be beneficial.

Another aspect that makes the Phantom 4 an attractive option is the higher quality camera on a gimbal. You do not have full 360-degree control of the camera, but you get steady shots. Unlike some other models with either a fixed camera or a camera built into the body.

How portable is the drone?

If you are using a drone for anything more than just a toy in the backyard it needs to be portable. There needs to be minimal chance of breakage and every expectation that it will work as expected when you get to your destination.

While there are a few drones that have portability issues, namely those with fixed props and built-in prop guards. There are also others that do not provide effective transport cases either. Plus it is also nice to be able to keep everything together in one place

Why DJI Phantom 4?

The Phantom 4 is a rather logical choice because the portability of the drone is part of the package you buy. The packaging you receive the drone, controller and accessories in is essentially a carry case. It holds everything you need, including a space for an iPad, spare props, charger and two extra batteries. Of course, there are other options available, but if it works, I figure why not use it.

DJI Phantom 4 Case

Buying the DJI Phantom 4

At the very beginning of my journey to purchase a drone, I set out with a budget of under $1,000. Once I decided on a DJI drone, the budget might have still been feasible, but I would have a limited choice. As you start comparing the features and options between DJI models, it’s hard to choose anything but the top models.

Choosing The Package

Depending on where you purchase a DJI drone there may be some great opportunity to save some money. While it is possible to buy the base drone package without any extras, there are extras you will want.

The package I opted for was the base package, two additional batteries and a three battery charging station. At the time I purchased the Phantom 4 in mid-2016 the prices was $2,399. With the same package currently selling for $2,174 in March 2017.

DJI Phantom 4 Kit

There were also some other accessories that I either needed to buy. While these are not essential, they are nice to have available or on hand if needed.

  • 2 x 16GB Micro SD Card. @ $17.00 each
  • Quick release neck strap for controller @ $17.00
  • 2 x Addition pairs of props @ $19.00 per pair
  • ND4 filter for the camera @ $55.00
  • Retractable Lightning Cable for iPad @ $12.00

So the total investment in buying the DJI Phantom 4 for me was $2,555, considerably more than my original $1,000 budget. However, I think there is some real longevity in the Phantom 4 over other potential options that I could have purchased.

Other Potential Costs

The biggest additional cost to the drone itself if you do not already own one would be a tablet. While it is possible to use almost any tablet or phone, it does need to be an up to date model. The processing power required for the DJI Go app need consideration in your decision when buying a tablet.

I already owned an iPad Mini that works great. But you definitely may need to consider in your total investment if you do not own something suitable.

The other investment that I am considering is a proper backpack to make carrying the Phantom 4 easier. From my research, the most recommended option is the Manfrotto D1. The cost of this backpack is around $280 in Australia in March 2017. However, the provided case is still relatively suitable for my needs at the moment.

What’s Next

DJI Phantom 4 Drone

My big next step is taking the time to get out and capture some footage with the DJI Phantom 4. To date even though I have owned it for some time, there has just been a couple of short flights. The biggest challenge is finding inspiration for what to capture and getting the right weather conditions as well.

Travel Tips

6 Tips For Fit And Healthy Travel

Fit and Healthy Travel - Walking

Taking a trip can often be one of those ideal scenarios for everything to go off the rails. At home, you eat healthily and get out and exercise. Of course when it comes to travelling it is so easy for everything to change or not be quite as easy to maintain. Healthy travel does not have to be a thing you dream of it can be a reality.

The healthy food options that you are used to at home may not be quite as easily available. You may not even have access to prepare your food. Likewise, you may find that the exercise you regularly do at home goes out the window. Hotel gyms are often fairly basic if they even have one.

I have three tips for each that might help you stay fit and Eat right while aiming for healthy travel. If you have another tip or trick that you use, I would love to hear it. Just head down to the bottom of the page and leave a comment. Just keep in mind that you are on holiday and you are looking to replace what you are missing when you are at home. Below are just some suggestions, and you need to consider your situation before taking any on.

Staying Fit

What you do in the way of exercise when travelling can vary widely to when you are at home. But often our fitness is not even considered when we travel. But there are some ways to keep fitness up and pursue predominately travel.

1. Get Walking

Fit and Healthy Travel - Walking

One of my favourite things when travelling is exploring a new town or city on foot. So many cities offer such a cast range of experiences that you can only see when you are walking. Jumping on a tour bus can be an option and maybe even essential to a bigger city to some degree

Jumping on a tour bus can be an option and perhaps even necessary in a larger city to some extent. But at some point, it is great to put the feet on the ground, walk, and explore. You might just be surprised at what you can find, plus the bonus is every step adds to your exercise for the day.

Personally, when travelling and walking cities, it is very easy to get that 10,000 steps a day. Often I will end up walking more like 20-25,000 steps most days.

2. Body Weight Exercises

Obviously, a big downfall of travelling can come if you frequent the gym. Although some hotels do have a gym, they can often be quite lacking in the facilities available. A treadmill, bike and maybe one or two other machines are often all that is available.

Using something like body weight exercises is something you can do just about anywhere. In a hotel room, in the park or even a carpark. Think about exercises like pushups, situps or squats, maybe adding pullups if you find the right area.

You could also look at alternatives if you did want to consider a way to get some weights in as well. Often furniture may have some weight to it and picking up a 5kg chair might meet your needs.

3. Take The Stairs

Stairs can be a great way to exert yourself a little more. So many places there is often an option of stairs, escalator or elevator. If you have the choice, consider taking the stairs, or just keep on walking on the escalator.

You do not always have to choose the stairs over another option; it comes down to considering the situation. If you need to go between 1 or 2 levels and stairs are available why not take them. It could even be quicker considering how long you may wait for an elevator. However, more than five levels definitely might be better in an elevator.

If you are unsure about stairs for example at a hotel or such, it is always best to ask first. The last thing you want to do when you are trying to get a little exercise is trigger an alarm.

Eating Right

Eating right can be an essential part of healthy travel. Just because you are doing more exercise either incidentally or on purpose does not entirely offset bad eating. The two need to work hand in hand to maintain something similar to what you might do at home.

1. Enjoy in Moderation

Eating in moderation is something we should be thinking about anyway. However, when there is a lot of options at times on holiday, it is one thing we need to keep in mind.

Moderation is not necessarily something you need to apply to every single meal. You can go and enjoy an experienced meal one night. But keep in mind if you indulge in every meal while travelling you might notice a difference in weight by the time you get home.

2. Limit Snacks

Fit and Healthy Travel - Snacks

Having snacks available when you are travelling is something that tends to happen. Eating to a schedule similar to at home is not always possible. While being more active can see you needing more food to keep exploring and enjoying your holiday.

It is important though to consider what you are snacking on and if the snacks are healthy or unhealthy. Snacks that are predominently sugar are good to avoid. Things like chocolate bars, lollies, biscuits and cakes are better left out of the travel bag. While you might like to consider other options like fruit, nuts, seeds, trail mix or raw food bars.

3. Plan Meals

An excellent way to avoid poor eating choices all the time while travelling is to plan your meals. Planning your meals helps to avoid getting to a meal time and just eating whatever is available nearby.

If you are going to be eating somewhere specific for dinner you can plan a light lunch. Eating a lighter meal like this can also save money and help avoid wasting food.

Also, keep in mind that if you do want to indulge in some treat while travelling, you don’t have to feel guilty. You just have to be aware of what you eat and how to offset that through other meals.

Aim For Healthy Travel

The above are just a few suggestions, to help you towards healthy travel. But at the end of the day remember you are on holiday. Eating a little more than you should or moving a little less than expected is not the end of the world. It just means that you might have to do a little extra to catch up when you get home.

If you are travelling for a longer period, healthy travel becomes more important. How you eat and exercise is worth keeping in mind. The longer you let things slide, the more difficult it will be to catch it up later on. Most of all though enjoy your holiday.

Cruising

Sun Princess 10 Night South Pacific Cruise

Sun Princess - Noumea City Views

Wouldn’t it be great, spending ten days visiting islands in the Pacific, exploring new towns and countryside? Without having to visit airports to get to each island. Without having to move between hotels. You go to sleep one night, and the next morning you are arriving at another island. I had the chance to make this a reality on the Sun Princess on the 16th of February 2017.

It can be a reality for you to when you choose to take a cruise. You board the cruise ship, and you get to visit ports without having to pack and unpack bags. You have all the food you need, all the entertainment you could want and an amazing journey ahead of you.

10 Nights onboard Sun Princess

A cruise is just what I have been up to over the last 11 days of February. On the February 16th, I boarded Princess Cruises, Sun Princess, and set sail for the Islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu. The cruise finished on the 26th of February, and it was a great experience. Below is just a little bit of an overview of the whole trip.

Day 1 – Brisbane Embarkation

The particular appeal for this cruise was embarking in Brisbane. Unlike the other cruises I have done, this cruise was a simple matter of driving to the terminal. My previous cruises have all involved no less than two flights or more before boarding.

Portside Cruise Terminal

Embarkation for the cruise took place at Portside Cruise Terminal in Hamilton on the Brisbane River. While I have visited the terminal area many times to see other cruise ships in port, this was my first time boarding a ship here.

Originally boarding was listed as starting from 12:30 pm, however, this was adjusted to 5:30 pm. The reason for the change was due to the presence of norovirus throughout parts of the last two cruises. The cruise line allowed additional time while in port to sanitise both the terminal and ship after passengers disembarked. It might be unfortunate for the delay, but I would prefer the delay to getting sick.

9PM Sailaway

Sun Princess - Brisbane Sail Away

A delay in the embarkation process consequently results in a delay in departing from Brisbane. Originally we were to sail away around 5:30 pm, but with the delay the sail away time was pushed back to 9:00 pm. It would have been nice to see the sun set over Brisbane as we departed. But instead, we got to see Brisbane shining brightly at night.

Day 2 – At Sea

Sun Princess - Sunrise at Sea

Being such a late embarkation yesterday, it has fallen on the first sea day to explore and learn my way around the ship. The two most important stops for the morning included the International Cafe and the Dining Room for breakfast.

Eating in the main dining room this morning turned out to be a very similar experience to other cruise ships. The total time for breakfast was around 90 minutes; this is from being seated through to leaving the dining room at the end. Possibly why this is only the second or third time I have had breakfast in the main dining room.

While listening to some music in the afternoon and having a drink with a friend onboard, there was an announcement of “Man Overboard” from the bridge. The announcement occurred around 3.30pm on board, and the passenger was recovered around 4.30pm. That was incredible work by the crew to get the ship turned around and found the passenger so quickly. You can find more information on the incident here.

Day 3 – At Sea

The second sea day for the cruise turned out to be a great chance just to relax. There was nothing that needed doing, nowhere specifically that I needed to be.

There was a chance to enjoy two movies on the big screen on deck 12 over the midship pool. The first was Finding Dory in the morning before enjoying lunch in the buffet. The second movie was the latest Jason Bourne movie after dinner.

Day 4 – Noumea, New Caledonia

Sun Princess - Docking in Noumea

Noumea is the first of the five ports on this cruise and the only one which I have visited previously. Today turned out to be a little different to my last visit to Noumea. The previous visit the ship docked at the passenger terminal while today it docked at the cargo port. There were buses to ferry passengers from the ship to the terminal.

Walking The Town & Geocaching

After getting to the passenger terminal, I had one particular thing I wanted to get done. That was to find my first Geocache in New Caledonia. The Geocache that I started with is Graffiti de Noumea #01 (GC63VBW). It turned out to be a total of around 20m from where the shuttle bus dropped off and was a relatively quick and easy find.

From here I walked around the central park in the middle of Noumea. Before heading up to a lookout over the city. It is not a bad view up here at all.

Sun Princess - Noumea City Views

Hop On Hop Off Bus

After the walk, I still had a significant part of the day to do some more exploring. Although walking to the east along the waterfront had potential, I opted for the Hop On Hop Off Bus to save a little of the walking. For $20 which could get charged to my cabin on the ship, there is a total of six stops. The stops included a market, shopping centre, Lemon Bay, & Aquarium.

I opted to take the bus along to Lemon Bay and explore the area a little. There are some cafes and restaurants in the area. They all look out across the road to the beach and the crystal clear water of the bay. I walked a little further east around the bay before returning to a restaurant for lunch.

Sun Princess - Nouema - Lemon Bay

After lunch, I decided to walk back to the passenger Terminal to catch the shuttle back to the ship. Along the way, I collected another four Geocaches bringing my total for today to five finds.

Day 5 – At Sea

If you were to look back at my original post about the cruise and the itinerary, today we should have visited Mystery Island. The Sun Princess end up getting within about 2km of Mystery Island. However, the captain considered the conditions and made the decision it was not safe for the Sun Princess to operate tender services. With the wind-force over 25knots it was not safe to enter the bay and the swell over 2 metres it was not safe to tender from outside the bay.

Sun Princess - Mystery Island

So it looks like for me at least Mystery Island will remain a mystery. With today as such becoming a sea day, and the ship continued towards the next port of call, Port Vila, Vanuatu. I won’t share too much about onboard activities here since I am looking to sharing this in another post.

Day 6 – Port Vila, Vanuatu

The weather as the Sun Princess arrived in Port Vila was not promising. There was a combination of some rather heavy rain, and even without the sun, it was already quite a hot day. Thankfully before the announcement that passengers could go ashore, the rain had stopped. Most of the cloud disappeared, and the sun came out, making a hot day, very humid.

Even with the hot and humid weather, I made the decision to walk from the ship through town and make a stop at a Geocache. I opted to make a stop at a cafe along the way on the walk, which was a welcome break in the heat.

Sun Princess - Port Vila

The walk is roughly 4km from the ship to the start of town, and approximately another 1km to the Geocache. After missing Mystery Island, the Geocache in Port Vila was one of only three potential options near to where I would be. So I wanted to ensure that I found this Geocache if possible.

I recovered roughly the same steps on the way back to the ship. I took a look inside one or two of the duty-free shops, but even though the alcohol is rather cheap. There is no point buying any since I very rarely drink much else besides coffee and water.

The port call in Port Vila is also the first time that I have visited Vanuatu. Vanuatu is the 32nd country that I have visited now; the setting is quite idyllic with some beautiful scenes over the harbour.

Sun Princess Port vila

Day 7 – Champagne Bay, Vanuatu

It is rather difficult to describe in words just how beautiful the area of Champagne Bay is. Champagne Bay itself is horseshoe shaped bay, surrounded by cliffs and mountains. The area is thickly covered by trees and scrub in many places down to the waterline. There are numerous pristine white sandy beaches scattered around the bay.

Sun Princes - Champagne Bay

Champagne Bay is a tender port, meaning that the ship puts down anchor in the bay. Then some of the lifeboats are used to ferry people from the ship to shore. As you walk off the tiny pier, you can follow around under the trees, where the locals have some market stalls set up. Alternatively, a small turn to the left puts you right onto the white sandy beach.

Sun Princes - Champagne Bay

I have a mixed bag of photo’s from Champagne Bay as I opted not to carry my camera off the ship. Instead, I chose to take minimal items with me and just took the waterproof GoPro.

Day 8 – Luganville, Vanuatu

Luganville is the last port of call before the Sun Princess sets a course to return to Brisbane. I am a little disappointed in Luganville. However, most of this does very much relate to the considerably limited assistance Vanuatu receive’s since becoming independent.

The infrastructure and general look and feel of the area is quite run down. There is one thing that I noticed both in Port Vila and Luganville, the friendly nature of the locals. I did not feel threatened at any time while walking between the ship and town. In fact many times I was greeted by the locals as I walked, either with a smile or a quick hello.

Sun Princess - Luganville

While the overall look of the town and area is run down, they are building a new terminal building at the port. It will help to improve the first impression for cruise ship visitors. But it is also only a small part of a much bigger puzzle. My greatest challenge today was jut finding a coffee shop for a cup of coffee. I am glad that I found one, and it was quite a good spot, but something that seems to be lacking here.

Sun Princess - Luganville

Day 9 & 10 – At Sea

After a few big days in port with a significant amount of walking in two of them, I was happy for a break. Being at sea on a cruise ship does often have a lot of activities going on. But it is also an excellent opportunity to relax as well.

I did not take advantage of to many of the activities in these last couple of days. But there is something for just about everyone when you are onboard.

Day 11 – Disembarkation in Brisbane

Sun Princess - Early Arrival in Brisbane

The last day of a cruise is always a little sad; you become a little attached to the ships you cruise on. Unlike staying in a hotel, on board a cruise ship you become a little attached. You get used to visiting different places each day and coming back to the same room each night. The consistency of always finding a hot meal without having to search out a good restaurant nearby.

Either way, it seems that you are disembarking the ship all too soon. I suppose it does not help that you must vacate your room by breakfast time. Also often departing from the ship before most hotels early checkout times.

What An Adventure

I must say I quite enjoyed cruising the South Pacific Islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Even though we missed Mystery Island, there was still plenty of adventure in the other port calls. The Sun Princess even though the oldest in the Princess Cruises fleet is still a beautiful well-appointed ship.

Probably the thing I noticed most was the landscape of many of these islands. With just a day in each port, there was so little time to explore these islands thoroughly. However, I could easily imagine some of the hidden gems if you had the time to explore on a deeper level.

Although there was some negative news around the Sun Princess with the cases of norovirus, it did not diminish my cruise. I thoroughly enjoyed cruising onboard the Sun Princess and would be very happy to join the ship again tomorrow given a chance.

Travel Tips

The Magic Of Disappearing Time

Time Zones, Daylight Savings & Travel

Everything that we do has some level of time that is needed to make it happen. Whether it is the time that it takes to make a cup of coffee or the time to fly from one destination to another. But all too often there is no opportunity to allow for extra time beyond the expected.

A Cup Of Coffee

How much time for coffee

Have you ever had an experience where you asked yourself the question “Do I have time for a cup of coffee?” You think I have ten minutes, it takes two minutes to make the coffee, one minute to serve it and five minutes to drink it. Ten minutes later you are still waiting for the coffee to be served to you.

Even something as simple as a cup of coffee has extra time associated with it that we do not consider. In a cafe, unfortunately, you are not the only customer most of the time. There could be any number of other orders placed before yours, still to getting served. Maybe there is another customer behind you that needs serving before the barista makes your coffee.

There is also the consideration that your calculation did not take into account other steps you needed to perform. Finding a car parking spot, walking to the coffee shop or considering the menu to decide what you want. All of this to say that we need to consider all of the factors when estimating the time that something will take.

Catching A Plane

Just like a cup of coffee, catching a plan is never as easy as just the flight. Consider the last time you took a short flight, maybe two or three hours. But somehow the better part of the day seemed to disappear. Between leaving your starting point to arriving at your destination the time seemed just entirely to disappear.

It is again all the little steps associated with catching a plane that all add onto the experience. You get your bags together and walk to the train station, 15 minutes. Another 10 minutes waiting for the train. A 20-minute train journey to the airport. The wait in the line and time to check in for your flight, 20-minutes. Another wait in the line for security, 15-minutes. Finally, 45-minutes waiting to board the plane.

Before you know it, it has taken over 2-hours to get to the 3-hour flight. But it does not end here. After landing, you have a 10-minute walk to baggage claim. Another 15-minute wait for the bags at baggage claim. Five minutes to find the way to the airport shuttle. With another 15-minute wait for the next service. A 40-minute ride on the airport shuttle to reach the city. Finally with a 15-minute walk to your hotel from the central drop off point.

Another hour and a half added to the end of the trip. So now to take that three-hour flight it has taken between 6.5 and 7 hours. Which is why you can find yourself arriving at a hotel and wondering why it is mid-afternoon and you still have not had lunch.

What About The Unexpected?

There are always going to be times that unexpected things are going to come up. A delayed plane, the coffee machine breaks down, or the traffic is bad. Of course, these are things that are difficult to predict. But just go with the flow and do what you can do.

It has happened to me, an unexpected delay on a flight changed everything for me that day. I was flying from London to Frankfurt, and just as the plane is moving back from the gate, there was a bang. It turns out the connection to push the aircraft back had broken.

They got it fixed quickly, only taking around 40 minutes to put another part in place. No problem ordinarily, except for the short 55-minute stopover I had in Frankfurt. It turned out I missed the connecting flight. But everything turned out being booked onto another flight just two hours later.

The moral of the story is that delays happen. It does take extra time for things to happen. But in most cases, everything works out in the end.

How Much Time Do You Need?

Whether getting a cup or coffee or travelling somewhere or any number of other things. Just consider how much time you are likely to need and make better estimates. Of course, you don’t need to determine the time that it will take if some problem changes things entirely. But at least try to determine the right amount of time for the aspects that you can control or know exist.
